This design addresses the needs of a Muncie neighborhood that has struggled to stay afloat following the departure of the Chevy plant in the area. Thousands of jobs were lost due to this relocation, and the neighborhood has experienced economic hardships since then. A proposal for a coffee shop and flexible community center with the future possibility of mixed housing provides jobs while also providing much needed common community space.
The structure of the coffee shop was designed to be inserted into an existing CMU garage on the site; the Glu-lam structure exist within this existing skin, allowing for a roof plane designed for daylighting and ventilation to be introduced to the building.
